What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation* involves a variety of techniques that can help patients feel more comfortable during dental procedures. Our dentists can help you decide if oral sedation is right for you.

At Driftwood Dental, we do everything in our power to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their dental appointments. Along with offering oral sedation, we work at your pace, take breaks when you need them, and provide calm reassurance as required.

*Sedation (IV) is only performed by Dr. Chambers and is only used for extractions.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are administered directly into your bloodstream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia.

Your dental team will attach you to a monitor so that the dentist can keep track of vital signs during the procedure.

Oral Sedation

Your dentist can prescribe oral sedatives in liquid or pill form. This medication is designed to be taken orally, typically about one hour before a dental appointment. Treatment may include a dose on the night prior to your appointment to mitigate anxiety-related insomnia.

While it will leave you awake for the procedure, it produces a calming effect to significantly relax you.

Is sedation dentistry right for me?

Many people - including those who see the dentist regularly - still sometimes get anxious around appointments. Please talk to our team about sedation dentistry if any of the following symptoms apply to you:

  • Fear of needles or pain
  • High anxiety about dental treatment
  • TMJ issues - difficulty opening mouth
  • Difficulty getting numb with local anaesthetic
  • Very sensitive teeth
  • Sensitivity to touch, smells, sights and sounds
  • Strong gag reflex
